It is an unfortunate fact of the human
condition that sometimes, we learn more about ourselves through our faults
and failings than we do through our good deeds. This is no better
illustrated than in this moving scene from "Full Moon Fascination".
Thanks to Frundock and Gottaname25, you'll be able to download an AVI of this scene here. Wait until this page has loaded, then start the download. It's about 3MB in size. (You'll need a DivX driver to see it. Good ones can be found at www.divx-digest.com at this location.) |
This scene takes place in Cybersix's apartment. In action reminiscent of the "Dressing Scene" in the first episode, Cybersix is getting dressed. The TV News is on in the background, and the newsperson is warning people off the streets. |
|
She puts on her cape as she walks up to the mirror. |
|
But when she gets to the mirror, she starts asking herself some hard questions about her motives for believing that Lucas has a problem. |
|
She wonders if her emotions are getting in the way of her judgment. |
|
"Jealousy is a human emotion." she says to herself. (She's a literature teacher: she has a good idea of what jealousy is like and what it can do to people.) |
|
"Is what I feel jealousy? Am I more human than creature?" she asks. (Her reaction in the next image comes from her realization that she has discovered that the part of humanity she possesses is universally condemned as evil!) |
|
The compression in the AVI loses the trembling of her eyes. You can sorta see it in her left eye (the one to your right). |
|
What is she thinking? "Am I as evil as those I have read about?" Or, "I'm more human than I thought, but I had to 'lose' Lucas to discover this?" Or, "I had a chance for Lucas, but lost it because of my reluctance to believe in my humanity."? Whatever it is, this is a powerful moment, having discovered something she's longed to know, only to find it by way of the evil in her own heart! |
Nevertheless, there's work to be done. Her hat hides her face as she rises. One does not know if she has faced the evil in her heart and has accepted it, conquered it, or put it aside. If she was thinking that she lost Lucas because of her own shortsightedness, she had decided not to mourn or be depressed. She's pushed it aside. It is a time for action, not for self-pity. |

The camera switches to the outside. The Music rises in intensity and splendor. There is a long, still shot characteristic of the finest Japanese animation... |

Then we see... |

I first thought of Superman when I saw this scene. And I still do. |
However, the more I think about it, the more I realize the symbology of this scene. The Cybers were created by a Nazi, and comes closest to the image of the Nazi "Superman". Yet, the one scene where we see her most like Superman is immediately after she recognizes within herself the evil that is Jealousy. |
It is irrelevant whether she conquered the emotion or not at this moment. She recognized that she had it. That's doing better than the majority of people, who delude themselves with their false humility by admitting to minor evils and ignoring major ones like this one. |
The first step to fighting evil is to recognize it. It's easy to detect it in others. It takes a real Superman, a real Superwoman, to see it in yourself and admit it. |
By the time you've finished this, the AVI will have loaded (and you're blessed with a faster connection than mine!). I hope you enjoy the scene as much as I do! |
